Newstead Mill stands on probably one of the oldest inhabited sites, dating from before the Roman times, in the oldest continually habited village in Scotland and is only a mile from the centre of the historic town of Melrose
The Old Mill House, built on what was once Melrose Abbey grounds, has a stunning outlook towards the River Tweed and is an ideal centre for visiting the Scottish Borders. If you’re here for the fishing, the local history or just looking for a break from it all, the Old Mill House is a fantastic base for your holiday needs.
The site is at the confluence of the Malthouse Burn and the Auld Cauld – a water course constructed by the builders of Melrose Abbey that runs through the garden of the house today. It may even have been the site of a mill during the Roman occupation of the village two thousand years ago.
The present building probably dates in part back to the sixteenth century and there are still some of the original exposed beams in the kitchen dining room. Some of the previous occupants have left their mark on the property – old mill stones in the garden, 18th century graffiti on the marble fireplace in the lounge and old Edwardian pictures. | contact: | Susan Graham 7 Townhead Way Newstead Melrose TD6 9BU

The Old Manse bed and breakfast is situated in the village of St Boswells and is an ideal base from which to enjoy all that the Scottish Borders has to offer - golf, walking, horse riding, Kelso Races, salmon and trout fishing beats on the River Tweed and shooting.
We have one double bedroom with en suite and two double or twin rooms which have private bathrooms all with a high standard of furnishings and tea and coffee facilities and toiletries. We can provide families with comfortable adjoining rooms. The lounge which has an open fire is a comfortable room for guests to relax in.
In St Boswells is Dryburgh Abbey, whose ruins are still remarkably complete. Look out for the final resting place of Field Marshall Earl Haig and Sir Walter Scott, as well as the 22-foot high sandstone statue of 'Braveheart' himself, William Wallace, at the end of a woodland walk. Abbotsford, three miles west of Melrose, was Sir Walter Scott's home for 20 years and is open seasonally to visitors.
Melrose, birthplace of the game of rugby sevens is 2 miles away and lies in the tweed Valley at the foot of the triple peaks of the Eildon hills. Melrose's ruined 12th century abbey, at one time probably the richest in Scotland, is the burial place of the casket believed to contain the heart of Robert the Bruce. The abbey is also the starting point for the St Cuthbert's Way, a 62-mile (100km) cross border walking route towards Lindisfarne, and the starting point for the Four Abbeys Cycle Routes. | |

Winner of the Holiday Care Service Award for the best self-catering accommodation in Britain, Eildon Holiday Cottages comprises six award-winning modern holiday "cottages" at Melrose in the Scottish Borders. Built of local Melrose stone (a lovely 'old rose' colour) in a secluded site on the edge of the town, the Georgian farmhouse and cottage buildings date back to 1830.
The cottages themselves are spacious, warm, bright and very well equipped. Five of the cottages are Category 1 (suitable for wheelchair users travelling independently) and have very special facilities for disabled and elderly guests. Access is easy and level throughout. In each of the cottages, there is at least one bedroom with shower or bathroom on the ground floor. The facilities for less able visitors are subtle and unobtrusive, to the extent that guests of all abilities will be equally comfortable. The sixth cottage is accessed via a short flight of stairs, and used to be the original Granary room.
The cottages are situated 600ft up on the slopes of the Eildon Hills with magnificent views over the Lammermuir and Moorfoot Hills beyond. Melrose 9-hole golf course is within 300 yards of the cottages which are ideally placed for touring the beautiful Scottish Borders countryside on traffic-free roads. Abbotsford, the home of the novelist Sir Walter Scott, is less than 4 miles away and there is much in the area to interest historians, architects and gardeners. Edinburgh and the coast of Northumberland and Berwickshire are an easy hours drive away. St Cuthbert's Way is but a few hundred yards from the cottage entrance.
The cottages are on the edge of Melrose itself, whose Abbey holds the heart of Robert the Bruce and which is one of the most attractive of the Borders towns with its unusual shops and fine eating places. Excellent hill walking, rambling, fishing, horse riding and golf are all available nearby. | contact: | Mrs Jill Hart Eildon Holiday Cottages Dingleton Mains Melrose Roxburghshire TD6 9HS
